Tweed River Art Gallery
Tweed River Art Gallery. Murwillumbah.

The Tweed Region is blessed with a fine new gallery. Its situation on Mistral Road is impressive. High above the river and the rolling green pastures and cane fields, with dramatic mountain layers framing the horizon. Mount Warning looms above all on the southwest rim.
This is one of the most gorgeous sites for a building.

The gallery architect Bud Branningan refers to it as The Art Shed, confirming an informal and flexible style.
Cleverly the architect has not done the obvious thing and spread glass everywhere, so that you end up with a corporate headquarters for a new face cream, but rather he has split the view from inside, into narrow slits, that surprise and entice. The exhibition spaces are open, modular and generous, but every now and then you get a glimpse of the deep wide green world outside.

The day we were there, the Archibald Prize 06 was in town, so the lucky people of the Murwillumbah and the surrounding villages along the Tweed River get to see some cutting edge and usually provocative portraiture art from all around the country.
Now in its 85th year the Archibald prize is the foremost portraiture prize in Australia and has courted controversy and even litigation. It has also launched many an artistic career.
In 1948 Margaret Olly was the subject of the winning Archibald portrait by William Dobell. Then a young girl and now an Australian artistic treasure, she is still actively pouring out her lusciously coloured still lives.
Margaret Olly, originally hails from nearby Tygalgah, and she officially opened the new gallery extension in September.

Apart from the permanent collection, The Tweed Gallery offers a host of creative activities, exhibitions and workshops.
The Gallery Café does great coffee and excellent lunches. We sat on the terrace and took in that fabulous view with our friends, before starting the serious stuff of looking at the paintings.

We encourage you to support this important and growing cultural institution.
Join the Friends of the Tweed River Art Gallery to ensure you are in the loop with current exhibition information. They also have social, workshop, educational and musical events.
