Climbing Mount Warning
Last weekend we finally packed a lunch and set off on our long planned climb up the mount!

The young things streaked ahead of us, but we just took the 8.9km steep path one step at a time as they say. We made plenty of stops on the way. Occasionally spotting a bush turkey or a huge striped worm. The abundance of Bangalow palms and other giants was amazing.

It did seem incredibly long as the hours ticked by but the cool palm-shaded ambience of the forest was lovely and amazing. Cool streams crossed the path occasionally and wound their way down the steep rocky inclines. Every now and then one got a glimpse of the valley and misty mountain ranges below.

Slowly the vegetation became sparser and large Gymea lilies started to be seen in clusters. When we got to the last leg we were greeted by the sheer rock path and chain that guides one to the summit. This was a bit of fun and involved a two-handed approach clambering straight up the granite with not much room for error.

...Then the summit! The pics say it all. 360 degrees of massive crater landscape in every direction. Uki and many other towns cradled here and there in the scoop of the hills. The Tweed River wide and sweeping away into the distance towards Murwillumbah.

After wolfing down our sandwiches and fruit we at last felt satisfied and ready for the return journey.
Getting down an hour later was a doddle by comparison with hardly a stop on the way ...just careful attention to where one puts ones feet on those rocky paths. (I was determined not to be involved in a helicopter rescue!)

Overall a great first-time experience. Something to talk about anyway while we get the calf and thigh muscles back into order! The blisters were legendary!
